DESCRIPTION
The ADuM3160 is a specialized digital isolator designed for USB 2.0 peripheral communication. Based on Analog Devices’ proprietary iCoupler® technology, it provides a robust solution for eliminating ground loops and protecting sensitive equipment from high-voltage surges and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Unlike traditional optocouplers, the ADuM3160 utilizes high-speed CMOS and monolithic air-core transformer technology to provide superior performance, lower power consumption, and greater reliability in harsh industrial and medical environments.
The ADuM3160 works by converting USB differential signals into a format that can be transmitted across an insulation barrier using micro-transformers. This architecture ensures that the upstream (host) and downstream (peripheral) circuits are electrically separated while maintaining data integrity.
APPLICATIONS
-
Medical Equipment: Essential for patient-connected devices to meet stringent leakage current and safety standards (e.g., IEC 60601-1).
-
Industrial Automation: Protects PLCs and controllers from noisy ground loops in factory floor environments.
-
Audio/Visual Production: Eliminates "hum" and noise caused by ground loops in USB-connected audio interfaces and DACs.
-
Field Debugging: Safe connection of laptops to high-voltage power electronics or motor drives during diagnostic testing.
