DESCRIPTION
A strain gauge is a precision sensor device used to measure the amount of strain or deformation on an object when force, pressure, or tension is applied. It operates based on the principle that a material’s electrical resistance changes in response to applied stress, allowing for accurate measurement of minute dimensional changes. Commonly made of a fine metallic or semiconductor wire arranged in a grid pattern, strain gauges are attached to the surface of the material being tested. When the material deforms under force, the strain gauge stretches or compresses, altering its electrical resistance. This change is measured and converted into strain readings, often recorded in microstrain (με), enabling precise analysis.
Strain gauges are critical in fields requiring exact force measurements, such as structural engineering, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing. They play a vital role in load cells, torque transducers, and pressure sensors. These gauges are often integrated with Wheatstone bridge circuits to amplify and accurately convert the small resistance changes into readable electrical signals.
